Richard Loehle was born in 1923. He attended the High Museum School of Art and the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) in Atlanta, and he later attended the Harris School of Art in Nashville, Tennessee. There he met Betty Barnes Loehle, another artist in Georgia’s State Art Collection, and the two married in 1947.

After living in Chicago, Illinois, for a time, the couple moved in 1967 to Decatur, where they lived for the rest of their lives. Richard Loehle specialized as an illustrator, fine artist, and portrait artist. His illustrations appeared on the covers of sports magazines, and Amazing Stories, as well as in Reader’s Digest. He died in Decatur in 2011.
Loehle’s watercolor painting Gulf Sand and acrylic painting Shed Door are part of Georgia’s State Art Collection.
